Women Weavers OnLine
N'kob
Piece 3.12820 was made by Biaa Farraji who is about 70 now. However she did not bring it so we have no photo. Bia lives in nearby Tazenakht with one of her grown sons. She will get the money when the rug sells, and give it to her son for household expenses. I do not know how old the rug is, but it looks older and is rather unusual. This may be because the weaver is from another area, Askaoun near Tilioune, to the west. This is a pile rug in the Tazenakht weaving style, but the design is off center. It is also an unusual size, about 5' x 8'. The color is mainly orange except for the blue center, which both varies in shade and has some darker blue knots in the lighter blue area. You can see them on this detail. (The dark spot at the bottom is a shadow.) While some might see these irregularities as problems, I think they come together to make a charming piece. The price is $495. It is SOLD, but I left it on so you could see a unique older piece.
This is Rkia Bakis, who made the rugs below. She sometimes weaves with her co-wife, but she made these rugs on her own. Looking at them, you can tell that she is an expert weaver.
Piece 3.12826 is a large knotted rug in the Tazenakht style. It has four outer borders and three panels, and the central one has its own border. The central panel is a very dark blue, and the end panels have diamond shapes surrounded by complex latchooks in white. The other main colors are a bright orange and a rich red, with touches of gray, dark green and black. You can see the clearly-drawn designs in this detail. The orange design above the fingers is a kholala, a piece of jewelry called a fibula in English and formerly used to fasten clothing. The dark areas at the bottom are shadows from the usual group of "rug photo spectators." The rug measures about 4' x 7'6" (122 x 228cm) and the price is $295. SOLD
Piece 3.12828 is a pile rug with an unusual design of rows of diamonds in rich red and orange on a rich blue ground. The diamonds are highlighted by white dots outlining them, and some are also outlined in gray. You can see the details best in this close-up. The dark area at the bottom is a shadow. This piece is about 4' x 7'3" (122 x 220.5 cm) and costs $290.
