Women Weavers OnLine
N'kob
This is Fadma Id Lehsen Afkir. She has three young children, two boys 8 and 11 and a daughter of 5. Her husband works in agriculture - if it rains, which it has done very little in the last several years. The money she earns from weaving is spent on the children, for things like food and clothing.
Piece 3.12812 is the one Fadma is holding above. It is a small flatweave in a rich red with designs both woven into it and embroidered on it. You can see them better in this detail. The center is green, and there are accents in white, orange and violet, with a thin line of blue at each end. It measures about 2' x 4' and costs $105. SOLD
This is Fadma Bouhassi, one of the two women leaders in N'kob. The village development association asked the villagers to choose women who had leadership qualities, and they were given training in several areas, including health, nutrition, family planning, communication, and conflict resolution. She made the two rugs below.
Piece 3.12814 is a pile rug in the lattice design, but using more colors than usual. Traditionally these rugs are black with gray and white lattices, but here Fadma has added red and orange accents. However, you will notice that the colors are not in the lattice at the right end. When I asked Fadma why, she said she didn't think of adding them at first. The borders also have red and orange, plus a tiny bit of green. You can see that better on the close-up. The size of this piece is about 2'4" x 5'5" and the price is $205.
Piece 3.12816 is a small pile piece with very unusual colors for this area. The ground is a natural tan with off-white designs accented with orange and red and outlined in a very dark blue. You can see the colors better in this detail. This piece measures 2'2" x 3'7" and it costs $125. It is SOLD, but could be remade, especially given the unusual colors for this area (you won't see anything similar).
