Women Weavers OnLine

N'kob

The two pieces below are by Fatima El-Jazouli, who you will see on a later page.

Piece 3.12804 is unique on my site. You have seen the word akhnif used above to describe flatwoven rugs, but this piece is a real akhnif, or man's cape. I've never seen one worn and expect they were for notables - you see them in museums in Morocco. In this photo it is upside down to make it easier to hold for photos. The extension at the bottom would be sewn to make a hood. Fadma has made several, and made this a year ago. I suspect they are sold to tourists. It does not lie flat, but that would not matter if you wore it. Even for wall display, you might not mind since it is difficult to find these pieces. It is also not totally authentic, since the lower edge is not fully curved but has square edges which you can see at the upper left here. The technique of weaving curved edges is being lost. The main color is a rich red, with a black "eye" and woven designs in touches of orange, blue-green and dark purple. Look at them on the close-up. The widest part is 8'5" and from the top of the hood piece to the bottom border is 5'3". The price is $345.

Piece 3.12808 is the more modern kind of akhnif, a flatwoven rug. Most of the designs here are woven, although some are finely embroidered. You can see the weaving on the right in the close-up, and the embroidery in the small squares on the left and in the border. This piece measures 2'2" x 3'9" and costs $125.
