This is Fadma Bourais, who made the three rugs below, plus the one she is sitting on - but that has been sold. Her husband works in a market in the larger town of Ouarzazate, about two hours away. They have two daughters who are married, and one son in junior high school. It took her two months to weave the rug she is sitting on, since she worked on it alone.

Piece 3.12792 is a small rug with both pile and flatweave sections. The black and white stripes near the ends are mainly flatweave, while most of the rug is knotted or pile. The main colors are a dark denim blue and red, with accents in yellow instead of the usual orange, and a bit of gray. In the close-up you can see where the red has run into the border in the upper left part of the photo, and there is a spot, but they are not prominent when viewing the whole rug. This piece measures about 2'4" x 5'4" (71 x 162 cm) and costs $175.

Piece 3.12790 is a small flatwoven akhnif in blue with a gold center that has some abrash or color change. The decorations are embroidered in a rich dark red, white, and a bit of violet and blue green. Those surrounding the gold center remind me of corn plants - perhaps the center is a field? You can see them better in this detail. The size is about 3' x 4'9" and the price is $120. SOLD

Piece 3.12794 is a small Glawa piece with pile, twining and flatweave. The central panel is pile in dark blue, and those on each side of it are flatweave in red and blue, the red bordered by black and white twining. Look at the close-up to see this better. This piece measures 2'2" x 5'1" and it costs $125.

This is Ijja Boufker, age 18. Her mother is Aicha Seqqat, one of the village's women leaders and an excellent weaver. Her daughter also weaves well, and uses natural dyes sometimes like her mother.

Piece 3.12784 is an example using natural dyes. It is called a tahaykt or cloak, and women wear them when going out to dressy events like weddings. The wool is plain off white, decorated with designs on the borders in dark blue, soft gold, yellow green and brick red. The colors are clearer in this detail. It does not lie flat, but that does not matter since it is worn. I would also use it as a wall hanging or to drape over a chair - it is too delicate for the floor. She and her mother also make pieces like this to order. The size is 3' x 5'3" and it costs $260.
