The items on this page and following it were added in the fall of 2003 or later. Because of recent fluctuations in the dollar-Moroccan dirham exchange rate, prices may vary a bit from those here, being either lower or higher. Although such a change is not very likely, if that is the case, I will let you know when you ask about a particular piece. If I don't mention it, the price is unchanged. Remember, all prices include insured airmail shipping from Morocco to the US, which usually takes about two-four weeks to the US. For shipping to other locations, I can let you know if the price is more or less; inquire by email.
This is Khadija Id Yassine and she made the rugs below. She never attended school, and began weaving when she was thirteen or fourteen. In addition to being a productive weaver, she has six children, four daughters and two sons. They range in age from a girl of 13 who is in her last year of primary school (like the US sixth grade) to a son under one. Her husband works in transport, and helps sell her rugs in nearby Tazenakht or in Marrakesh. When I asked what she does with her earnings, she said "the children eat them."
Piece 3.12838 is a small knotted rug which has five central panels, giving it a lot of design in a small package. The central panel's ground is a rich dark blue with a rich dark red design. The end panels are on black, and the design is the kholala or ornate pin once used to fasten clothing. There are accents in dark green, bright gold and gray, seen best on the close-up. This piece measures about 2'7" x 4'1" (76 x 125 cm) and it costs $195.
Piece 3.12840 is a small pile rug with a very different design, the lattice on a black ground with white outlined in gray. The outer border has a red ground with many colored accents including dark denim blue, dark green, rich red and bright gold. You can see those colors best in this detail. The rug does not lay totally flat, but a rug pad will solve that. The size of this rug is about 2'5" x 4'6" (74 x 137 cm) and the price is $170.
Piece 3.12842 is a small pile rug and looks older, and the wool has a sheen to it.. The ground is a subdued cherry pink and there are accents in a rich yellow and a flat orange. There are two irrelgular medallions, and in the close-up you can see chickens. The size is about 2' x 3'4" and the price is $110.
