N'kob
The items on this page and following it were added in the spring of 2003. Because of recent fluctuations in the dollar-Moroccan dirham exchange rate, prices may vary a bit from those here, being either lower or higher. Although such a change is not very likely, if that is the case, I will let you know when you ask about a particular piece. If I don't mention it, the price is unchanged. Remember, all prices include insured airmail shipping from Morocco, which usually takes about two-four weeks to the US. For shipping to other locations, I can let you know if the price is more or less; inquire by email.
There is also another recent change. On my March 2003 visit to N'kob, the school principal Si Houcine suggested that perhaps rug sales could help the village primary school a bit. He knew that a percentage of each sale goes to help the village development association, which in fact contributed it to help the school build latrines. The principal suggested that a small percentage, like 2% of the weaver's price (not subtracted from her price, but added to it), might go toward the needs of the primary school. There is a village PTA (Parent-Teachers Association) and the money is being put into their account; in fact, they needed a minumum balance of 600 dirhams or about $60 to open it, and much of that was from their 2% on each rug sold. Thus sales of the following pieces will help improve the primary school for these village children.
Now - on to many new pieces.
The rugs on this page were made by Jamila, one of N'kob's master weavers who you have met before.
Piece 3.12722 is an akhnif or flatwoven piece, like a kilim. The background is blue with a design of rectangles in maroon, white and bright orange, and finer designs embroidered on the rug. You can see the embroidery, in the same colors plus a bit of green, better in this close-up. The size is about 3'8" x 6'8" and the price is $215.
Piece 3.12724 is also by Jamila. It is an akhnif or flatweave, with the squares in it separated by borders of pile. The colors are a rosy pink, soft gold, dark denim blue and a dark green. You can see them better by clicking on this photo to enlarge it, or by clicking on the close-up. In each square, designs are embroidered. It measures 3'8" x 6'10" and costs $250. SOLD
