Women Weavers OnLine

Ben Smim

The pillow below was brought by an older woman, Khadduj Jaafari, who did not want her picture taken. In fact it was made by the first wife of her current husband; she has a married daughter by her first husband, but he died. She says her current husband is now "100 or 120 years old", so the pillows may be quite old too. The husband lives by selling off bits of their land, and she cares for their chickens and cow.

Pillow 3.12924 has four different design bands on the face in soft colors including an orange-red, pink, and light green. You can see the unusual designs well on the close-up. The back has colored stripes in a pinky-beige, pinky-gray, bright pink, rich red and orange, plus two design bands. It is now filled with wool but would be shipped empty to decrease the cost of postage. It measures 14.4" x 17.5" and costs $56.

The three pillows below were brought by Aicha Tahounni, but she did not make them - another woman did. Aicha is a widow and has many children who are all married now. She lives with the son of one of her sons, and is probably selling the pillows to raise a bit of money. The pillows are very similar, yet if you look closely you will see variations. They have an overall design of diamonds with plain backs in bright red. The faces have vibrant colors including bright blue, yellow, kelly green, neon orange, true red and maroon, and there are some sequins on the faces and edges plus tufts along the edges.
